S is for Stitch blog tour

Today I am happy to be a stop on the S is for Stitch blog tour.
S is for Stitch is written by Kristyne Czepuryk, who is the lovely and talented woman behind the blog Pretty By Hand. Her work is amazing! It's ALL so pretty and inspiring to me. I think she may love pink even more than I do!

I'm not normally an embroiderer, even though I have all the supplies. (Funny how that works, isn't it?) As a child I embroidered a few dish towels, but not much beyond that. It is a skill that I would like to have in my repertoire.
This book gave me the confidence to try my hand at it once again. My first project was to embroider this little kitty, which is one of the many patterns in the book. I am pretty excited with the results!
My kids saw me stitching and they all wanted to embroider something, too. (Even my boys!) They enjoyed paging through the book and picked out projects. I helped my 12 year old get started on the inch worm. He is doing a great job so far and he enjoyed it! The other two are still waiting for their first lesson. :)
After the success of my kitty, I had to try my hand at words. I wrote out the lyrics to soft kitty (from the Big Bang Theory) and stitched them up. (I have fun plans for these!) The words were a little tricky. Next time I would make the letters a bit larger and leave more space between some of them. But, all in all, not too bad.

Things I like about this book....

The stitch guide is straightforward and very clear. I learned what an outline stitch is and how to do it. I also worked my way through a few colonial knots. (Don't look too closely...still more practice needed there.)

There are tons of cute patterns! A set for girls and a whole other set for boys. It's really hard to find good boy stuff, if you ask me. It totally passed the test with my boys.

Kristyne offers basic guidelines and options, then she encourages you to choose the method that works best for you. I love that! It's so much better than a rigid set of do's and don'ts.

The book is wonderful for beginners (that's me!) but I would imagine that it would be equally wonderful for a well experienced stitcher.

I love that the projects are stitched up into QUILTS! (A big shock there, huh?) Beyond that, there are other options shown: pillows, soft toys, clothing and framed pieces. So many fun ideas!

If you would like a chance to win your very own copy of the book, please leave me a comment in this post. In your comment, I'd love to hear your thoughts on embroidery, since that's the subject of the day. I'll pick one winner on April 4th. US resident winner will receive a hard copy of the book or an international resident will receive an eBook. Oh! Please be sure to leave your email in your comment, so I can contact you should you win.

Please be sure to follow along the tour for more chances to win.

I would love to win this book. I am the wife to a minister. I go with him on a lot of his trips. I like to have hand work to do but don't always have a quilt or table runner to bind! This would be a fantastic opportunity to work on something for a quilt. My grandmother used to embroider, she made a quilt for me with lambs, kittens, chickens, puppies all embroidered by her which I treasure as she died thirty years ago! Thanks for the opportunity! My email is mullirahe@yahoo.com

Oh my goodness, your kitty and lyrics are so cute. I would love to get my hands on this book because I am such a beginner when it comes to embroidery, but how beautiful the potential.

Great job Amanda and kids!

I love to do embroidery and counted cross-stitch. With embroidery, however, there is no need to keep referring to a chart for all the stitches. I find embroidery to be very relaxing and I can take it with me and stitch just about anywhere.

Growing up my mom embroidered many designs in shirts and coats for my brothers and I. They were so awesome! She taught me how to embroider and I remember it being fun and challenging. As I got into my teens and 20s I did cross stitch wall hangings - lived that! And now I haven't done any of it for 20 years. I have gotten into quilting, however. And think the 2 would go hand! By the way, I think you did a great job on your kitty and words! I will now have that song stuck in my head all day.

AmandaJean, have been out of town past week so stopped by to see what you were up to and I had to laugh. Last weekend before I left my 19yo dtr, who learned the basics when she was 9, gave my 9yo dtr and myself an embroidery lesson. While 19yo was a bit rusty from not stitching the past 5 years, she taught us what she knew and admitted she had forgotten it was relaxing and fun. For our first project of course we stitched tea towels, with Scotty dogs since that was the simplest transfer pattern we had. The 9yo absolutely ran with it, has outstitched us, and moved on to her next towel. So will definitely have to look for this book. Thanks for the great family-tested review! Y'all have a great week! Stay warm!

Thanks so much for the embroidery book " S is for Stitch" review. I too am an embroidery beginner and love the children's design you showed. I need all the help I can get, so I think this will be a book for me! I loved that you said your not going to pick your project apart "literally or figuratively", because being a quilter I know how hard that can be! LOL! Happy Stitching!

I've done needlework, largely cross stitch growing up. It wasn't until recently that I've done embroidery (and applique too) and I love, love, love it. I can take it with me while I sit and wait as I pick up and transport all my littles around town and to and from school. It is so relaxing.

What a cute kitty. I too, learned as a child and did a few things. I've kept off and on through the years. Need to use my stash of floss and this would be a great way of doing it. Thank you. Love your pillows.

After crochet, embroidery was the second needlecraft I learned from my mom. I remember embroidering kitchen towel sets and pillowcases. Would love to get back to it.

I love to embroider! I learned when I was a kid, but didn't love it. I found it too slow for me, then picked it up again about four years ago. If I can do it in front of the tv at night I'm happy!

I embroidered a lot when I was growing up and treasure the pillow cases my mom made a long time ago.
This book would be inspiration to try it again. Thanks for the give away.

My mother thought my sister and I should learn to stitch as young girls. Back then I preferred spending time with my pony.

Making quilts for children is fun, adding stitchery to personalize the quilt adds to the cute factor, and is fun.

I would so enjoy the projects in "S is for stitch".Thank you for the chance to bring this book into my home.

Embroidery is something I'm just starting to explore. I have all the supplies too! I keep picking up hoops from thrift stores. My kids are all anxious for me to show them what to do. It would be great to have a goo reference with ideas for projects.

When I started doing patchwork I was dragged kicking and screaming into the world of stitchery. Now I love adding stitches to my appliqué and doing the occasional stitched piece. I would never say that I do embroidery. I would love to win the book. The pictures are very cute.
